Jonathan Blair is a composer, originally from San Diego, California, living in Cape Town, South Africa since 2015. He studied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under Conrad Susa, and with Michael Norris (New Zealand School of Music, Te Kōkī at Victoria University of Wellington), Advanced Harmonic practices with Hendrik Hofmeyr (University of Cape Town) as well as piano with Anna Marie McCarthy(San Francisco Conservatory of Music), Marc Steiner, focusing on the technical facility outlined by Dorothy Taubman(The Golandsky institute of New York).
He has been a distinguished artist by invitation extended from United States Governmental agencies in California, and was Composer-in-Residence for Journey Community from 2012 until his relocation to South Africa in 2015. He was the music director of Meridian from 2013-2015, as well as the music director of Chris Rubio’s(STOMP) Dance studio from 2004-2007. He has collaborated with some of the most important performers in South Africa today, and has authored the first of a treatise in composition, ‘The Composer’s `Study’ which was a best seller in category for 6 weeks on Amazon.
His music has been commissioned and performed in the United States, Europe and Africa, and includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra and choirs. His music has been actively featured in podcasts, on radio, and he is published through Novus Neuma Music Publishers, Gusthold Publishers, and Subito Music Publishers in New York.
He is currently engaged in post-graduate studies in Musicology, returning after a decade of actively working as a composer.
